From Jill N. Jones of OWN Peterborough Chapter: “Attached is an article from our local paper – Ptb Examiner: Carol Winter — one of our OWN members — was chosen as one of our TOP 20 most influential people in Ptb!!! We are very proud, as Carol works tirelessly on issues of poverty!!! Sometimes not something that one gets recognized for ….”
From Peterborough This Week, July 18, 2012, “Peterborough’s Most Influential People,” (and on the web):
Carol Winter saves lives. This statement may seem over-the-top, but there are few in this community who do so much, for so many with so little desire for reward or recognition.
Her life is dedicated to helping those in dire economic straights. While influence and power are often marked by the amount of wealth a person has or the political or business experience and contacts they have, there is also influence and power of a different kind.In the world of poverty and income inequality, Carol has unselfishly and tirelessly remained a force for good in our community. Be it political activism, feeding the homeless and hard to house, or simply offering an empathetic ear, Carol’s life revolves around improving the day-to-day existence of our most marginalized citizens. She visits the sick at the hospital, provides tarps and blankets and food for those who are living in unfortunate circumstances; she counsels the underprivileged; she helps many through the often confusing and painful paperwork that exists for the low income.
If you want to know about Peterborough poverty and the people that exist in that community, Carol would be the first and perhaps only person you would need to meet. She calls herself Peterborough’s bag lady, but for those she helps or those who have watched her help others, she is known as Peterborough’s Mother Theresa or simply Saint Carol.
See a short video on Carol from October 2010.
